Focus on the Athlete
An Athletes' workout program must be much more structured and vigorous than the routine
of the
average person.
A workout program is custom developed to focus on the specific areas needing improvement or enhancement. Workouts will include specific drills that will help them to improve the individual skills needed for their sport(s) or activity.
Potential drills will include:
Plyometrics are exercises that enable a muscle to reach maximum force in the shortest possible time. The muscle is loaded with an eccentric (lengthening) action, followed
immediately by a concentric (shortening) action. A muscle that is stretched before a concentric contraction will contract more forcefully and more rapidly.
Plyometrics are one
of the best ways to develop sport-specific power. When plyometrics are performed concurrently with
strength training, like muscle and resistance training, the effect will be that much greater.
Speed, Agility, Quicknessare derived from using the reaction force from the ground or an object as quickly as possible. Athletes must learn to apply force, along with stable joints, to take
advantage of the reaction from the ground or an object. Low level, quick response, multi-directional plyometrics are a key element in improving agility
and quickness.
Balanceis an ability to maintain the center of gravity of a body within the base of support with minimal postural sway. Many injuries in sports are due to lack of balance or
proprioception. The term proprioception refers to a sense of joint position. Proprioception training is good for rehabilitation and/or the prevention of injuries.
Flexibilitytraining is perhaps the most undervalued component of conditioning. By increasing joint range of motion, performance may be enhanced and the risk of
injury reduced. Dynamic and static (active and passive) flexibility are both important during training.
